My Letters To My Son

Hi Son

April 8, 2024 By Dad

Hi Son,

How’s it going on this fine day? It’s a great day here and I hope that it is there as well.

Do you ever have those days where you wake up in the morning and don’t feel super empowered? I had one of those days today. I woke up with a headache, which rarely ever happens, and I have to admit that that threw my day off just a bit.

I suppose that any of us could simply stay in that unempowered state, because having any kind of pain, headache or otherwise, can make it difficult to jump up and down with joy. Besides, if you did that with a big goofy smile on your face people would just think you were weird. All joking aside, it’s clear that some things can put us in an emotional state that we don’t want to be in.

Well, as I’m writing you now, I still have a headache, but just the thought of doing my part to communicate with you is definitely uplifting. Also, I haven’t put myself in an emotional framework where the pain from the headache is going to ruin my entire day. Why would I do that? Well, I do that simply because unempowered emotional states, in general, make things seem much worse than they need to be.

You see, the pain from my headache could easily be a seed that will trigger additional negativity. For instance, today is a workout day for me. Now I don’t know if you’ve experienced working out with a headache, but personally I don’t remember the last time that it was very much fun. It would be easy to use the headache as my excuse to skip my workout altogether. Does that mean I’ll skip my workout altogether? No, it doesn’t mean that, but I may simply wait until my headache goes away and workout after that.

The headache I’m referencing is just one of the many types of “seeds”, if you will, that can grow into something negative and influence or completely overshadow something positive, like a workout. Much of the time, the seeds are mental and not physical. What I mean by that is anything that can be used as an excuse not to do something can be referred to as a seed. I call this a seed because once it’s planted it can grow into additional excuses that we convince ourselves are legitimate reasons not to move forward.

When excuses crowd our mind and start to overrun all the good reasons we have for moving forward, we must exercise our discipline in order to overcome the excuses. We must tell ourselves that no matter what we will continue to move forward as planned. We must always keep in mind a list of the long-term benefits of the task at hand that far outweigh any short-term excuses that may hold us back.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
