Quick question: What would you do if you found out that someone close to you had been lying to you your whole life?
Regarding the question above, I would say that many of us would take the news and be in denial about it. That makes sense because if all we have heard our entire life has only been one side of the story, why should we believe an alternate version of that story?
The interesting thing about this is that if you approach the person who has been lying to you, it is likely that your questions will be met with animosity. Why? Because animosity is being used to add credibility to the person and the lie they have been telling. Sometimes people will act offended, but believe me, it is only an act. If the person who has been lying to you is an authority figure they realize that their reputation is on the line and will deny the truth forever.
Another reason that the liar must defend the lie is that they realize that if they admitted that they lied you may question everything they ever told you.
