My Letters To My Son

Buenos Días Son

December 28, 2020 By Dad

Well, here you are the start of another great week ahead!

Something came to mind and I wanted to talk to you about that is vitally important. In all that you do in life make sure that you act with integrity at all times.

I think that integrity starts with the decision to do what is right regardless of the circumstances. To some, this may sound oversimplified or trite and to others even unimportant. Those who feel it’s unimportant are under the mistaken impression that the rules of life don’t apply to them.

Let’s take a look at an example of acting with integrity. Say you are at a grocery store and you pay for your groceries with cash. The cashier hands you back your change, but, in error, gives you $10 more in change than you are due. So, what do we do in this case? Truthfully, this isn’t a question that should even pop into our heads in a situation such as this. The action you take in this situation should be hardwired into your being.

We all know that what we should do is to carefully recount our change to make sure that there is a $10 overpayment. Then, we politely inform the cashier that she has given us to $10 too much and give her the $10 back. This is to be done immediately after we realize that we have been overpaid.

Now, there are some who will consider this to be, “found money”. The type of people who feel this way may simply continue to walk away and even if they felt they should give the money back, that feeling would fade the further away they got from the cashier.

There are any number of excuses one could use for keeping the money. They can range from, “the store has more money than I do, so I’ll just keep this”, to, “it’s been a tough year financially and I deserve this”, to, “I am poor, so anything that falls into my lap I consider a gift”. Newsflash, being poor or broke does not mean being stupid, selfish, or dishonest.

Of course, there are people who would take advantage of the above situation and keep the money. People like that are a dime a dozen! When you act with integrity at all times you will be the man who is the rising tide that lifts all ships.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
