My Letters To My Son

Bonjour Son

August 7, 2023 By Dad

Bonjour Son,

I hope that you are having a great day!

How was your weekend? The weekend here was exactly what I needed.

I have spoken about the importance of doing your own research on several occasions. This is especially important when browsing the internet. While the internet contains tons of information, we must always remember that there is much misinformation, biased opinions, as well as out-and-out lies.

Finding reliable sources of information on the internet and in life can be challenging. When we seek information from an individual, we must keep in mind that many of us are biased. In fact, much of the information we get from people we know or have known is biased. We have to remember that opinions and facts can be two completely different things.

An example of an opinion could be someone telling you it’s a beautiful day when it’s pouring down rain. While it’s admirable that someone was able to put a positive spin on a torrential downpour, most people would say that it is not a beautiful day.

Let’s look at another example of opinion. There are some people who would label a certain group of people with a negative label. For instance, if someone from group A says that all people from group B are stupid, that is an opinion. First I would ask that person to define, “stupid”. Next, I would ask that person if they have met and evaluated every single person in group B. That person from group A might define stupid as, “anyone who doesn’t take advantage of people”.

So, in our example above, a person from group A apparently believes that lying to and cheating other people requires what they would call, “intellectual ability”. Also, it is unlikely that the person from group A has actually met and evaluated every single person in group B. That would mean that using the word, “all” would be inaccurate. Basically, the person from group A formed a biased opinion based on incomplete information.

As ridiculous as the above example sounds, I think we would both be surprised by people who actually think that way.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
