I wanted to chat a bit more about happiness. The concept of a “happiness gene” was introduced in a previous letter to you.
Personally, I don’t know if the happiness gene is a real thing or not. I firmly believe that happiness is a choice. Yes, you can be happy by deciding to be happy!
Once of the first steps in anyone’s happiness journey is to define what happiness is to them. It is different for everyone. For some, being in a loving and empowering relationship would be more than enough. For others, being a billionaire, owning a professional sports team, and all the trimmings of wealth would be how they could experience happiness.
I would speculate that the more things it takes to make you happy, the more difficult it will be to be happy. Also, each of the things that are on your list will take different amounts of time to achieve. For instance, if I said I would be happy if I was a billionaire by next Monday, something truly miraculous would have to occur.
I’s great to have goals, but compressing the timeframe as in the example above seems like a recipe for unhappiness.
If you have to have a huge list of things to make you happy, doesn’t it stand to reason that it will be more difficult to be happy?
One simple thing that has helped me live a much happier life has been to live with an attitude of gratitude. I know that you have probably heard that a million times, but I can tell you that it definitely works.
As a Christian, my faith in God and His love for me is a tremendous source of happiness. You had mentioned that you had questions about God. We can discuss those at any time you wish.
