My Letters To My Son

Howdy Son

March 10, 2025 By Dad

Howdy Son,

I’m in the office today having a cup of coffee. Do you drink coffee? Drinking coffee in the morning has become a habit for me. I typically prepare my coffee right before heading into the office.

In the past, I used to use a standard coffee maker. Now, I grind my own beans and use a pour-over coffee maker. Believe me, this method is not as quick and easy as using a coffee maker and the clean up afterward is more time consuming.

I’ve had people tell me that the way I make my coffee is “too much trouble.” I can see their point. It does take more time and effort than the traditional method of using a drip coffee maker.

When I make my morning coffee I’m not looking for efficiency, I’m looking forward to the incredible taste that the process produces. If my process produced coffee that tasted the same or worse than coffee made with a coffee maker, I would most likely use a coffee maker. Why? Because there would be no benefit to using my pour-over method.

I suppose we could look at this as an example of focusing on the outcome rather than the obstacles. The outcome being great tasting coffee and the obstacles being the steps involved, especially the cleanup involved after making pour-over coffee.

In life you either want something badly enough or you don’t. How badly you want something is directly proportional to the time and effort you put into getting it. Focusing on the outcomes (your goals), rather than the obstacles (any real or imagined roadblocks) increases your chances of living the life that you want.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
