My Letters To My Son

Dad

Hello Son

February 15, 2021 By Dad

Hello Son,

Well, here we are at the start of another exciting week! My weekend was wonderful and I certainly hope that yours was too.

Last week, I shared the following quote with you:
“Everyone must choose one of two pains: The pain of discipline or the pain of regret” – Jim Rohn

When I was last speaking of discipline, I used health and fitness as they were areas where many people struggle with discipline. Quite naturally, discipline is necessary in all areas of life.

Another example of discipline might be as follows: Let’s say that I had an important task that I needed to complete for work, but I needed to do it over the weekend. Let’s also say that friends had invited me to hang out for the weekend and go to wine country for some fun in the sun. Suddenly, completing that important task for work doesn’t seem nearly as appealing as it did before the choice of fun in the sun entered the picture!

In the above two choices of weekend activities, fun in the sun with friends is definitely the path of least resistance. After all, what could possibly be the downside of having fun in the sun with friends over the weekend? Alternatively, completing the important task for work can be viewed as the path of most resistance.

If we are to look at the two choices objectively, we would have to consider the big picture, long-term consequences of selecting one choice over the other. It wouldn’t take long for us to see that fun in the sun with friends is something that we can basically do at any time. Completing the important task for work over the weekend and having it done by Monday, takes priority, not only because there is a deadline involved, but because of the long-term impact it may have on our business or career.

When we exercise discipline, and push through the pain of the path of greatest resistance, we virtually eliminate the possibility of experiencing the pain of regret.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
