My Letters To My Son

Dad

How Are You Today Son

September 21, 2020 By Dad Leave a Comment

How was your weekend? I hope that it was great and that it was all that you’d hoped it would be.

Here’s something to reflect upon that will serve you well in the future. Here’s a quick question on the very important topic of lying. When you witness someone lying to someone else, what makes you think that person won’t lie to you? To believe that a person who lies to others will not lie to you is not only illogical, it is naïve.

Personally, I wish people were more truthful, but the reality is that many people are not. I, for one, have not always been a truthful person. Anyone who claims to have been truthful throughout their entire life is probably lying.

I think that it takes time and effort to become an honest person. It is a conscious decision that one has to make. Far too often, children grow up in double-standard households. Their parents attempt to drill the importance of telling the truth into the children, but continue to lie themselves. Parents or anyone who acts in this fashion are called “hypocrites”. Merriam-Webster defines a hypocrite as:

1: a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion
2: a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings

It is unfortunate that some people are hypocrites, but it is especially unfortunate that some parents are. Parents are supposed to do what is best for their children and being a hypocrite is not best for their children or anyone else.

None of us can ever be doing ourselves a favor by trying to form or maintain relationships with people who are dishonest. As the saying goes, “When you lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas!”.

There are two important factors to living a life of integrity:

1 – Be an honest person of integrity
2 – Align yourself with other honest people

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
