My Letters To My Son

Dad

Hello Son

June 27, 2016 By Dad Leave a Comment

Hello Son,

Well, another great weekend has past and here we are at the beginning of what I’m sure will be another great week.

What’s new in your world? Here we’ve been getting a good amount of rain and that means that the grass is growing faster than ever. That also means that the weeds are growing faster than ever too… and the weeds always seem to grow faster than the grass, right?

Well, I have a choice. I can either continue to cut the grass and the weeds and treat them the same. If I continue to do this the weeds will continue to grow faster than the grass and overtake the lawn. So what should I do?

If I do what I’ve been doing I’ll continue to get the results I’m getting which are not the results I want. I need to do what Dr. Stephen Covey speaks of in his book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”…. Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw.

In his book, Covey tells the story of a man walking through the forest when he spots a lumberjack sawing feverishly in an attempt to cut down a tree.

The man asked the lumberjack what the problem was to which the lumberjack replied, “My saw’s blunt and won’t cut the tree properly.”

The man then asked the lumberjack why he doesn’t just sharpen the saw to which the lumberjack replied, “because that would mean I would have to stop sawing!”.

“But if you sharpened your saw, you could cut more efficiently and effectively than before.”

“But I don’t have time to stop!” The lumberjack said, getting even more frustrated.

The man shook his head and kept on walking, leaving the lumberjack to his pointless frustration.

Just like the lumberjack I wasn’t stopping to “sharpen the saw”. So, with that in mind, I have decided to sharpen the saw by changing my approach and spraying the lawn with a chemical to kill the weeds.

If we stop and think about it, we would start to realize how much time, effort, and frustration we could save ourselves if we just stop and take the time to “sharpen the saw.”

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day!

Love,

Dad
