My Letters To My Son

Great Morning Son

November 2, 2020 By Dad Leave a Comment

Here we are at the start of another amazing week!

It’s cloudy out today with more rain in the forecast. People here are welcoming the rain because it has been so dry here for so long. How is the weather where you are?

When I look at the overcast sky, I think about how much your Grandmother loves the rain. She says that she really sleeps well on a rainy night. I sleep well on a rainy night as well. There’s something soothing about hearing the sound of soft rolling thunder and the sound of it raining on the roof of the house.

Of course, that’s not to say that I don’t sleep well on nights when it’s not raining. I want to have the best night of sleep possible every single night. For me, rain or no rain, when I lay my head on the pillow, sleep follows shortly after.

So, you may be asking what is the point of all this. Don’t worry, I’m getting to that. We all have preferences or expectations based upon certain conditions or circumstances. Whatever our preferences are, we still must live with the days when those preferences or expectations aren’t being met.

Something that we want to avoid is “pre-planned disappointment”. That simply means that we shouldn’t think or say things like, “I won’t sleep well tonight if it doesn’t rain”. Let’s think about that for a moment. Here, the statistics show that we have roughly 105 days out of the year with some type of precipitation. That doesn’t necessarily mean rain, but includes, snow, sleet, etc. So, we can say that we have roughly 265 days with no precipitation.

Based on the estimated above, if our belief was that we will only sleep well when it rains, we could expect to not sleep well for roughly 265 nights a year every year.

One thing that we have to keep in mind is that there are simply many things which are not under our control. For instance, we can’t control whether it rains tonight or not. What we can control is how we feel about it raining or not raining.

We can control how we interpret any situation. Sometimes it simply isn’t easy, but it is always necessary.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
