My Letters To My Son

Happy Monday Son

Happy Monday Son,

I hope that you’re having a great day and that you had an absolutely wonderful weekend. Also, I hope that your mom, the rest of the family, and your friends are all doing okay.

I ran across one of my favorite quotes today and I thought I would share it with you.

“We do not see things as they are. We see them as we are.” – Talmud

That quote brings to mind the tale of the six blind men who walked up to an elephant to experience what the elephant was like. Each of the men reached out and touched a different part of the elephant. One man felt the elephant’s leg and described the elephant as a pillar. Another felt the elephant’s tusk and described the elephant as a pipe. Yet another felt the elephant’s trunk and described the elephant as a tree branch. The fourth man felt the elephant’s tail and described the elephant as a rope. The fifth man felt the elephant’s ear and described the elephant as a fan. The sixth man felt the elephant’s belly and described it the elephant a wall.

Rather than describe the elephant as an elephant, each of the men held fast to their beliefs that the elephant was either a pillar, pipe, tree branch, rope, fan, or wall. Clearly, each man was describing the elephant incorrectly, but if you or I would tell either of them that they were wrong, they would absolutely insist that they were right and that we were wrong.

That short little story sort of reminded me of the times in my life when I wrongly focused my energy on a small piece of a puzzle, rather than looking at the big picture. I suppose everyone experiences this at some point in time in their lives. We should never be so focused on the details that it makes us blind to the bigger picture.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day!

Love,

Dad
