My Letters To My Son

Hi Son

May 28, 2018 By Dad Leave a Comment

Hi Son,

I saw this really cool quote that I thought that I would share with you:

“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light. – Plato”

Okay, I admit, that it might not seem that cool on the surface, but let’s dig a little deeper. I’m sure there are quite a number of ways to interpret what Plato has said. My interpretation of it is that “the light” is truth or even reality.

I totally get being afraid of truth and reality because both the truth and reality can be some tough things for us to face in life, for sure. After all, being in denial and staying in the dark is something that keeps us inside of our comfort zone. It is also something that all of us have done, are doing, or will do at some point in the future. While being in our comfort zone helps us to “feel better”, it doesn’t really help us to “do better” or “be better”.

It’s pretty easy to want to “stay in the dark”. Sometimes shedding light on ourselves reveals truths we would rather not face, but they are truths nonetheless.

Look at it this way, at least with the “light” we can expose our flaws and shortcomings and see them for what they are. Depending upon where you are in life, that can be a very unpleasant experience. What makes those realities even tougher to face is the fact that we are already in an especially overly judgmental and critical world.

But wait, there is a tremendous upside to facing our own personal truths and realities that may reveal our flaws and shortcomings. The upside is that once we see ourselves more clearly, we can take steps to radically improve ourselves. It is better to have our true selves found and revealed in the light, than to be lost in the darkness!

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
