My Letters To My Son

Hi Son

October 26, 2020 By Dad Leave a Comment

I hope that you are doing well and that you enjoyed this past weekend.

Last week was a super-busy week for me. I probably shouldn’t say “super busy”, but I should say very productive. After all, anyone can stay busy spinning their wheels. The objective is never to stay busy, but to make progress and accomplish what you set out to do.

I will openly admit that I had previously procrastinated on many of the tasks that I completed last week. I could make all kinds of excuses as to why they weren’t completed previously. In the end, I had simply failed to take action on the objectives that I’d set.

When I looked at what I consider to be the monumental scope of the tasks to be completed, I felt overwhelmed. So, rather than get started on the overwhelming project, I shifted my focus to smaller, easier to complete tasks.

Recently, especially in the past week, I revisited my monumental project. Once I revisited the project, I still felt overwhelmed. Then I reflected on a quote by Lao Tzu that says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” That quote really resonated with me and it was enough to get me to take that all-important first step. I then decided to devote a focused 30 minutes to the tasks and accomplished as much as I could in that short timeframe. That 30 minutes turned into an hour and in that one hour real progress was made.

Like any of the other things that get in the way of our progress, a constant and conscious effort must be made to resist the urge to procrastinate. Procrastination is the enemy of progress and any enemy of progress is also the enemy of happiness and achievement.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
