Well, I’m still in the process of organizing both my office and my home. To say that it’s been overwhelming is an understatement. After I started, it initially felt even more overwhelming! Why? Because I was surprised by how much I let get out of hand.
Fortunately, as I continued to get more and more organized, I realized that it wasn’t necessary for things to get so out of hand. For me, it was a matter of priorities. I prioritized my mental/digital organization over my physical organization.
Today, I wanted to get some physical organization and then after spending time on that I wanted to dive right in to mental/digital organization. I’m glad I did it that way for a number of reasons.
1 – Mental/digital organization can easily become all-consuming. I am working on a spreadsheet and once I brainstorm everything the spreadsheet should do, I begin creating and testing it. After that I put in test data to make certain the formulas are correct and the spreadsheet is functioning as it should. From there I am looking for some automation solutions for the spreadsheet. One example would be automating the importing of the data to be analyzed.
Doing the mental/digital part last kept any nagging thoughts of, “when are you going to get to the physical organization” at bay.
2 – Doing some physical organization first freed me mentally to devote my complete attention to mental/digital brainstorming and organizing.
