My Letters To My Son

Dad

Great Morning Son

June 21, 2021 By Dad

Great Morning Son,

It’s another great day at the start of another great week!

I was thinking about something someone told me. This person made a statement similar to, “The way this actually works is…..”.

I pondered the person’s statement for a while and basically just listened to them make any arguments they may have had to support their statement. Once I had finished my conversation with that person, I thought to myself, “What real evidence does this person have or what real research have they done to come to their conclusion?”.

Based upon the way that the person made the statement and the fact that they seemed to repeat the same statement over a period of months, it seemed like they really believed what they were saying. Sometimes, and I am saying sometimes, rather than, “often” or “frequently”, people repeat a statement either to convince themselves that it is valid or to convince you that it is valid, or both.

So, this person had the belief that their statement was true. Merriam-Webster defines “belief” as, “a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing”.

After I thought about what that person had told me, I reflected on how little actual research, if any, that this person had done. As it turns out, their belief was biased because they applied their belief to themselves and assumed it must be true of the other party. This person’s statement was based on an assumption with very shaky evidence, so I dismissed the information as inaccurate and/or incomplete and inconclusive.

I have had a longstanding belief that it is best to do your own research and get your facts straight before you believe something is true or not, and definitely have your facts straight before you even think about sharing your information with someone else.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
