My Letters To My Son

Dad

Buenos Días Son

How’s your day moving along so far? I certainly hope that it is great and that you had a groovy weekend!

Last week we were discussing racism and looking at a definition of racism. We summed a definition up as follows:

“So, could we say for the sake of argument, that racism is “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent quality or state of being of higher rank, quality, or importance of a particular race”.”

It is said that one of the most important of human needs is the need for significance.
People have a need to feel unique in comparison to others. A simple way to say this is that basically at some point in time or the other we all want to feel special.

Now, wanting to feel special doesn’t seem so bad does it? I mean, who doesn’t want to get the highest grade on a test or do something to prove to themselves and others that they have done well?

There is nothing wrong with wanting to do well. Much can be achieved through hard work and perseverance. But what about those who believe that they are born superior to others simply because they were born of a certain race? Now that may be a more challenging concept to grasp.

Let’s continue this conversation at a later date.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
