How Are You Today Son,
I trust that you had a wonderful weekend and hope that you already having a wonderful week.
I mentioned that I was going to tell you about my hike with my mountaineering backpack.
The hike was more of a walk around the neighborhood with an interesting twist. I put a 50lb. weight in my backpack to make the walk more challenging….and challenging it was!
The first challenge was to actually put on the backpack. That wasn’t so easy, though I was able to wrestle it on. Then came the task of adjusting the backpack’s belts and straps for the most comfortable fit and to balance the weight out more evenly. At this point I could already tell that the walk was going to be a challenge.
I walked out the front door and proceeded to the sidewalk. At this point I knew that this felt like one of those, “I’ve bitten off more than I can chew” moments.
As I walked down the street, I was moving the backpack around to make it more comfortable. The shoulder straps, even though they were wide and padded, were digging into my shoulders. I also found myself leaning forward a bit to keep my balance.
My recurring thought throughout the walk was focused on getting through the walk. Basically, I wanted to complete the task at hand without injury.
Needless to say, I struggled through the entire walk, but I did complete the task. I came away from the walk with a wonderful sense of accomplishment, but also with some good feedback. I did not start in the way I typically start workouts and many other things in my life. I did not start small and build up to 50 lbs. As a result of this, I didn’t give my body time to adjust to this type of workout by starting incrementally.
As the saying goes, “Mile by mile it’s a trial, yard by yard it’s hard, but inch by inch, it’s a cinch!” So, the next time I will start with a smaller amount of weight in my backpack and work my way up to heavier weights in the future.
Well, that’s all for now!
Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!
Love,
Dad
