Top Of The Morning To You Son,
How’s it going there today? I hope that all is well and that things are going better than expected.
I remember in a previous letter that I mentioned the work involved in preparing to move. I also mentioned that after two full days I didn’t feel like I had made any progress. The reason being is that I didn’t really see much progress. One simple reason this can happen is that we often find ourselves laser-focused on what has to be done rather than what has already been accomplished.
I do remember a quote that I love that I have to remind myself of from time to time:
“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” — Robert Louis Stevenson
This is a great quote as it reminds us to trust the process of planting seeds with the understanding the harvest will indeed come. I know that we all have worked feverishly in anxious anticipation of finishing a task. Sometimes we don’t factor in the fact that all progress is not linear. Let’s say, for instance, we may want to fix a leaky faucet in the bathroom. We dive in enthusiastically after planning things out in our heads. We may get started only to realize that we don’t have the right tools, so we may go borrow from a neighbor or relative. We dive back into the task to then realize that we are missing an important part. Now, we head to the hardware store to grab the part and then head back home. After working on a task that turned out to be much more tedious than we had initially envisioned, we are finally done.
The task above is just an example of how nonlinear completing a task can be. In some cases, where the goal is completing a task that is very complex, there can be many frustrating ups and downs. One of the best ways I’ve found to deal with task completion is first to plan and then to tell myself these three simple words; “whatever it takes!”
