My Letters To My Son

Letters

Great Morning Son

January 18, 2021 By Dad

Great Morning Son,

Wow! What a great weekend this past weekend was! I certainly hope that yours was too.

Let’s have a quick follow-up on our previous discussion regarding doing your own research to separate fact from fiction.

Doing your own research is important whether you are getting your information from someone you know well or from your favorite news station. What you’re really seeking is very simple. You are seeking the truth.

When you seek the truth, it is important to seek it objectively. Admittedly, that’s not the easiest thing to do. Frequently, when one is doing one’s own research, it is to verify a preconceived notion or bias you already have. To do your own research objectively, you have to ask yourself a very simple question, “What is the real truth of the matter?”.

Let’s say that you are a member of a particular political party and you believe that supporting a particular issue is the right thing to do. In this case, your research might consist of you simply looking for that information which justifies your stance on the issue. While this is common, and may lead to actual good information, I do not believe it is the best course of action.

When you only look for that information which reinforces your particular belief, you may be missing a lot of other important information. For instance, you may miss valid points of others who have an opposing viewpoint. The opposing viewpoint may contain truth as well and should certainly not be ignored. Seeking the truth with true objectivity is not for the faint of heart, but it is necessary for those who truly want to see the, “big picture”.

Well, that’s all for now!

Have an amazing day and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Love,

Dad
