Well, here we are once again at the start of yet another amazing week! How are things going there? Naturally, I hope that all is well.
Recently we had been discussing racism. If you remember, we summed up racism based on dictionary definitions as:
“a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent quality or state of being of higher rank, quality, or importance of a particular race”.
I am going to try and be objective here, which is typically the position in life that gets plenty of criticism.
What if I believe that because of my race that I am of higher rank, quality, or importance than members of other races? In theory, is that so bad? I mean, after all, we did describe racism as a belief right? Isn’t it true that people are allowed to believe whatever they want? While it is true that people can believe whatever they want, that doesn’t mean that whatever they believe is true or right.
Now, if I believed I was superior to members of other races, I could go about my day working side by side with people that I felt superior to. I could be kind and courteous and helpful to those people because after all, if I am a superior person, I naturally have more to offer that those I believe I am superior to. I could actually demonstrate my belief in my superiority through contribution.
But, in general, we do not describe those who we would identify as racists as I described in the paragraph above. Typically, racist and racism are viewed negatively, right?
